Imagine you have the ability to walk around with a pair of sunglasses on that allows you to see the physical world in a virtual context, where your view of reality could be filled with information from sites like Wikipedia, Facebook, and Google Maps?
Welcome to the world of Augmented Reality (AR). AR is an emerging technology, which can be described as a field of computer research that deals with the combination of real-world and computer-generated data. AR allows computer generated graphic objects to blend into real footage in real time.
AR is already becoming increasing popular in gaming, as it gives creators the ability to build a new layer of interactivity into games. It is also used in children books, allowing kids to travel into a fairytale reality that could not previously be seen with the naked eye.
Augmented reality has also made it possible for a new form of advertising to emerge through smart phones. Apps feature the ability for advertisements to appear on your mobile screen as miniature virtual billboards assigned to GPS coordinates.
The classic business card will also become a thing of the past as AR graphics transform a piece of card into a tool for marketing businesses, brands and individuals. With this type of technology at our fingertips there are no limits, and in the next year we hope to see AR grow to new and greater heights.
